This Chic Airbnb Calls for Ditching City Life for the Desert

we publish covetable home tours on MyDomaine every week (sometimes every day) and I think it's safe to say that most of them we would want to live in. But aside from pinning them to our dream home board, there's very little chance we'll actually get to see inside these spaces in person. So we asked ourselves, what if we featured dreamy home tours that you could not only see inside of but could also stay in? Well, we're kicking off a new series that takes you inside those next-level Airbnb rentals across the U.S. that you want to live in, and now totally can for the weekend.

When the couple was looking for homes, they really wanted a vaulted ceiling but when they first visited this space it originally had a dropped office-like ceiling. But Tim had a hunch there was more than meets the eye so he stood on top of their realtor’s shoulders and popped up one of the tiles to see if their hunch was correct. And they were. Glorious original beamed ceiling lay hiding beneath.

If you hadn't already guessed, the vast majority of pieces featured in this home are vintage. "We had collected many of the items before getting the house and continue to fill the space and swap out pieces with more vintage stuff as we go," he says. "We go to thrift stores, estate sales, antique stores, shop on eBay, Etsy, and Goodwill. We road trip a lot and always come back with a car full of new stuff."

The end goal for the space was to create something that felt cozy and cool. "There were several rentals in the area when we got started (and a lot more now) so we wanted to differentiate ourselves from the rest," Tim explains. During the design process, they leaned into the 70s rock'n'roll vibe imagining that this was a place where a rock band would stay while they were writing an album. "We filled it with vintage books about music, art, nature, and sexuality as well as classic rock vinyl and cassettes to help push that vibe," he adds.

Aside from the drop ceiling, they made several other soft renovations that included pulling up all the carpet and linoleum, polishing the concrete floors, removing the bathroom vanity and designing a custom one for the space, installing new windows in most of the house, upgrading all the electrical, removing all the upper cabinets from the kitchen, refinishing the countertops, painting the whole interior, and building a fence and deck outside. "You should see the before pictures," he says.

With such natural beauty surrounding the house, both Tim and Merrill wanted to include the tones of the desert inside too. The oranges, pinks, and other earthy tones reflect the desert and magic sunsets. They infused some darker elements to anchor the lighter colors without being overbearing.

While the biggest challenge usually involves the renovation, in this case, it was getting the house in the first place. "It’s so damn hard to get a mortgage when you are a self employed artist so just getting qualified was hard," explains Tim. "Once we got the house it was difficult because we had a one-year-old son at the time and were only able to work on the house two days a week. So that took a while."

One of their favorite finds is the cabinet in the living room which they purchased from a local swap meet for $25. "The seller told us the whole story of where it came from and was so happy for us to buy it," he says. "We weren’t sure what to do with it initially but it fits perfectly in the space."

The second biggest challenge was the floors. After weeks of trying to get the old linoleum and glue off, they eventually hired a professional. "He did it fast and it looked great and then after that everything else was finished quickly because we didn’t have to deal with the floors," he says.

This is definitely a dream dining room situation so it's hard to believe that is the table and chairs only set them back $200. "It really was a dream find," says Tim.

The kitchen moves into darker territory with the midnight backsplash and yet it doesn't veer too far thanks to the star tile wall feature. "The tile something that I found and showed my wife and she used that as inspiration for the rest of the house," says Tim.

There is a lot of personality in every room, which only raises the charm factor.

Designing a home you own is definitely a lot of fun and in fact, seeing the home complete has given them a sense of fulfillment and confidence that they could do it. "We always wanted to do a flip and after all the effort, seeing the final result is really satisfying," says Tim. "Having all of the pieces we’ve acquired and curated over time fit so perfectly in the space is also great. It is hard, though, because it’s not our permanent residence so when we are there we hate to leave because it’s everything we want in a house."

Despite it being an Airbnb, each of the rooms feel incredibly personal and just like home.

Each bedroom has a cool vintage feel and the thrifted paintings really help to add charisma.

We love how they have incorporated modern lighting to keep the house elevated yet still vintage and bohemian.

Who wouldn't want a hot tub while enjoying this view? In fact, it was one of the was the first big things they bought for the house. "Even while the house was still deep in construction we could always end the night in the hot tub," he says. "It was a good decision." We couldn't agree more.
